Ask A Chola hosts the Revver Screening Series at the Goethe-Institut in Los Angeles

4.29.08, 12:44am
Earlier this month, Revver - the greatest video website in all of history - asked me to host the third installment in their screening series. The night started off with pizza and an open bar, and then there was the screening, of course, which included my video about Cholas, the Founding Fathers and the U.S. Constitution. After that, it was time to mingle and make my way around the party at the oh-so-hip Goethe-Institut in Los Angeles (home to the largest collection of German film in the United States, so it's definitely worth checking out the next time you're near Museum Row! Tell Stefan that Chola sent you.) chatting it up with other internet celebrities (*cewebrities) such as Black Nerd and Pansy Warrior Princess. Also featured in this video: hipster scarves, surreal neon green screen walls, Kraftwerk-style robot dancing with Alex B. and my confessions about my guy problems to a ceramic troll. Stay up to speed with what's going on at Revver by reading the Revver Blog and enjoy this video made by Alex A.!

Trying to understand the concept of "Chairez"

04.18.08, 12:11am

Recently, Tryno Maldonado - Mexican writer and fellow scholar of Chola-Irish history - glowingly blogged about me and my St. Patrick's Day video. In describing my comedy, he used "chairez", a term en español que no conosco.

Platiqué con mi amigo Leo Agusto y me dejó con la impresión que "chairo" quiere decir "kitsch" o "campy". And now the linguist in me is dying to get to the bottom of this...

A simple Google search pulls up the following video called "Los Chairos" by a blogger named Plaqueta. Apparently, los Chairos are a new tribu urbana en México that likes to wear peasant shirts, eat organically and pass their time quejandose de la globalización.

So, ahora tengo unas preguntas..

¿De donde viene "chairo"? Es decir, ¿cual es la etimologia de la palabra? Quiero saber el origen lingüístico... No se encuentra en mi diccionario.

¿Soy chaira? I thought I was chola... y, claro, a veces, un poquito EMO... ahora, I'm having una crisis de identidad... :)

Stephen Colbert on Larry King Live for Pennsylvania Primary

9:43pm 4.15.08
As most of you know, Stephen Colbert is my hero. He is the master of satire. In case you missed it, he was interviewed on CNN's Larry King Live on Monday. It was one of the funniest things I've seen all year. My personal favorite part is when Colbert defends fascism saying it "gets a bad rap". JAJAJA! Here's the beginning of the interview. You can see the rest on YouTube. Also, don't forget that Colbert is broadcasting from Philadelphia all this week for the Pennsylvania primary!
